The Community Sector by Marion Woyvodich

Some Just Don't Want to be Noticed

Like the media, private foundations are relatively free from accountability. They must complete an IRS form number 990-PF and give away 5 percent of their assets annually toward the fulfillment of their tax-exempt purpose. Beyond that, what they communicate about their philanthropy is entirely up to them. For many, being noticed is just not a priority. According to one consultant to private foundations, many clients believe that no news is good news when it comes to private giving: "They prefer to give quietly and would never announce their gifts — to the media or anyone else."
